Shopify vs custom ecommerce: an honest decision guide
CoderCart · 2026-08-18
Shopify earns its place when you need a proven checkout, app ecosystem, and a team that can launch a storefront without rebuilding payments and order flows. Theme work, subscriptions, and B2C catalog growth are common sweet spots.
Custom or hybrid ecommerce makes sense when operations outgrow a standard catalog: supplier autoflow, B2B pricing rules, invoice logic, role-based admin, or integrations that do not map cleanly to Shopify's model.
We have shipped both. CW Wines runs on Shopify with custom app work; EuroTiles required a broader commerce and admin platform. The difference was operational complexity—not brand size alone.
Cost follows scope, not the label 'Shopify' or 'custom.' A heavily customized Shopify stack plus apps can approach custom build effort. A lean custom MVP with disciplined scope can beat a fragile pile of plugins.
The useful output of discovery is a written recommendation: which workflows stay in Shopify, which need custom code, and what a phase-two path looks like if the business grows.
